Russian islands declare emergency after mass invasion of polar bears

Authorities in the Russian archipelago of Novaya Zemlya declared a state of emergency over what they call a ’mass invasion of polar bears in inhabited areas’. Reports indicate about 52 bears have made regular visits to the region since December, some displaying ’aggressive behavior’ including attacks on humans. The animals are recognized as endangered species, and hunting them is banned.
