Sri Lanka advertises for hangman to resume executions for drug trafficking

The Sri Lankan government, influenced by the Philippines, began advertising for hangmen, as the country pushes ahead with a hardline policy to combat drug trafficking. President Sirisena said last week he wants to resume the use of capital punishment for drug traffickers. Sirisena had praised President Duterte’s war on drugs during his trip to the Philippines last month.

It would be good to see them offer an amnesty to dealers and users who give themselves up to a rehabilitation program before they start killing people. Friends and relatives should be encouraged to hand over dealers and users. It would focus people's minds on the consequences of being caught. The government could destroy existing networks and feed back information to countries supplying drugs, like China.
