So the New York HQ thing aside, is there anything nefarious going on here or is this just anti corporate bias pushing a narrative of Amazon reaping unfair benefits?
Havoc44 2 months
I like capitalism as much as anyone else but we all have to admit reaping that much in benefits from a system and then not paying taxes back into it shouldn't be acceptable
Shane Olson 2 months
Any corporate bias aside, why should mega corporations pay no income tax when small business can pay almost 40%. End the tax loopholes
Ralph 2 months
income tax is only income tax, it's not like they pay no taxes

Fernando Granizo 2 months
If there was something illegal they should be audited. The articles suggest though that it was made through tax loopholes. My opinion is that corporations and people be taxed a flat percent and be done with it. That way instead of paying for expensive accountants they pay the government.
Ralph 2 months
they will still hire accountants to guarantee they're paying the absolute bare minimum

Flat tax isn't. good option my man.
Jessie Sokol 2 months
I agree. Let’s do a flat 0% tax on EVERY ONE.

So the U.S. middle income taxes will compensate for the multi-billion dollar company's lack of. How's that working for us?

Take the money from the workers and give it to the Corporations, because they know how to spend it better.

It's a rock and a hard place. No individual is allowed to negotiate whether or not they'll pay income tax, but corporations can, not quite an even playing field there. They even intentionally commit crimes if the profits from said crime exceed the losses incurred from fines, fees, and settlements which is beyond effed up. They also stimulate the economy and provide jobs to millions of people.....

What else is new. They're a corrupt company in a corrupt country with masses of insanely ignorant and apathetic citizens. Plus the mainstream media is like a bullhorn for billionaires and their destructive agendas. When will the American people start acting like American people?

When my wife had her business, we had Carry Forwards, also. Things you could not write off in a single year but hat to write off over 5 or 7 years. They're available or required at every level. Amazon works on the growth model. pouring all their profits back into the company for growth, and only taking enough profits to get their write-off.
flinx101 2 months
Very true last year Amazon made a 600 mill profit. The top managers had a meeting with Jeff where I imagine they all thought it was bonus time. Jeff flat out told them they were all fucking up and to put that money back into the company.

How do I get in on this action? (If this is the IRS reading this, I am asking for a friend...)
Notsurewewillsee 2 months
You need to start a business and hire at least 5 people, however, start ups are very risky and will probably require you to work without any real pay or employees for the first 2-5 years. After that, payroll comes first, then growing the business and then if there is any left over you can buy bread for your family. There is a reason businesses get lots of tax credits because they have an insane mountain to climb to actually become profitable.
The First Man 2 months
I follow, and trust me, we’re on the same side, but Amazon isn’t a small biz anymore. No mountain to climb. They ARE the mountain...

I am not an expert on this, but I am pretty sure Jeff pays income taxes just like anyone that works at Amazon.

and this company has the gall to demand tax breaks for its HQ 2. smh
Ralph 2 months
they were never asked for, only offered as an incentive
David Thompson 2 months
Amazon solicited offers (read: bribes) from cities all over the US before choosing NYC/DC for HQ 2. clearly those governments were willing to give Amazon the biggest handouts.

Sounds about right if you do the leg work. By the way this can happen for anyone if you put in the leg work but you know it's easier if you use a bunch of accountants or if you study accounting which is free for personal study and use.

Too bad every company didn't have to pay taxes at same rate as Amazon. Since Amazon gets a tax break, maybe they can use that money to pay & compensate their workers more fairly.
liberty Ann 2 months
They could but they don't.

You are aware they have shareholders they have to please as well, right? It is a fine balance in growing your company while keeping the people who fund it happy. Whether the middle class likes it or not, when you work for a company, you are basically saying, you want the security of a paycheck vs the risk of investment. Because you take security, you end up with less, where as if you take the investment road, you can either, lose big or win big. So companies (that are smart and want to keep their companies going so they can give those secure paychecks) will ensure the shareholders are happy first.
flinx101 2 months
Amazon pays quite well so don't know what your talking about.

Eric Fossum 2 months
Amazon exploited loopholes in the tax code. Most people do that, some are better than others and companies invest a lot to gain from these loopholes. Amazon sucks, but there is nothing corrupt about it.

Notsurewewillsee 2 months
People are upset about things I’m guessing the majority don’t understand. Has anyone even liked at their annual report. Just a quick glance can see while they may not pay one portion of taxes doesn’t mean they aren’t paying anything. I mean in 2017 they leased over 200k sq ft of space. That isn’t cheap and I assure they are paying the property taxes on that area indirectly. Not to mention if Amazon were to say screw it to the US, how many jobs would be lost, which means even less taxes for the government. There is more that I could say, but I doubt most care enough to actually research when it is easier to be outraged.

I guess it’s all legal, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right.

one of the biggest reasons they paid so little in taxes (1.197 billion in 2018) is that they gave about half of their profits (5.4 billion) to their workers. All of their workers, not just the executives. that's something that should be commended, but meanwhile all of these reports cant seem to mention that despite the fact that it erased half of their tax liability. but it would be hard to call them the bad guy if you told people about that wouldnt it?
