In a first, woman applies to contest Syria’s presidential election

Faten Ali Nahar, a 50-year-old woman from Damascus, has filed her nomination papers to contest Syria’s presidential election. This is the first time a woman is running in the country’s symbolic election for the presidency, which has been held by President Bashar al-Assad since his father, Hafez al-Assad, died in office, in 2000. Assad had won the last election by over 90% of the votes, in 2014.
