Justices weigh arguments on religious cross case

The US Supreme Court on Wednesday signaled a willingness to let a 40-foot-tall (12 meters) cross-shaped war memorial stay on public land in Maryland despite a legal challenge. The 2014 lawsuit challenged the cross as a violation of the US Constitution’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government’s endorsement of religion. A ruling in the case is due by the end of June.

It is simple symbolism, yes definitely has religious intent but the truth is its culturally relevant symbol. We use pagan symbols all the time, that doesnt mean the government promoting them. It simple means they are culturally relevant sources of symbols we can use. I have no problem with the cross. Just because people bleave in it shouldn't exclude it.

As much as I think the government should not endorse any religion, the fact is this cross is technically a memorial. Those people deserve to be remembered for their service. Should modern memorials be built in the shape of a cross? Probably not.

Speaking as an atheist, I consider people demanding a war memorial be vandalized in the name of separation of church and state is childish and anti theist. What anti theists fail to realize is that erecting a giant cross to honor the fallen is meant to be a show of good will, not religious superiority. Context doesn't matter to them, just the quote.

But wasn't the cross in question put up with privately raised funds almost 100years ago as a memorial of 46 local men whoes lives were lost in WW1.

For a site that clearly states that it reports the news through a lense of faith, the CBN reporting on this was shockingly professional and impartial.

It is so embedded to American and Western culture you couldn't even confine it if you were in the Soviet Union. The symbolism and allegories from the Bible are in the art at the Supreme Court. This is so idiotic. Read the history of freedom of religion clause. It was designed so the federal government couldn't have an official state religion. individual states were allowed to and did. they existed for decades after the Constitution was written.

The only possible way I can see this cross being detrimental is if the 46 Men it is memorializing weren’t Christian.
