Trump vows to sign executive order requiring ’free speech’ on college campuses

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) annual meeting on March 2. Following the videotaped assault on Hayden Williams, Trump stated that he would soon sign an executive order requiring universities and colleges in America to uphold ’free speech’ on their campuses. Trump threatened the loss of federal research funds to schools which did not comply.

agreed, this shouldn't be necessary. I'm glad president Trump is in office to support this though.

College was supposed to be a place where free speech was championed. This shows you how far backward they've gone. They're all echo chambers now.

Good. I spent my college years genuinely afraid of what might happen to me if my conservative veiws became public knowledge. No student should have to go through that.

Our local university, UC Davis, called the police after someone posted It's okay to be white flyers. We need Title IX to be gutted. It's the legal veneer to all the anti-freedom snowflake ordinances on campuses.

As long as it’s literally just a mandate saying you can’t stifle speech in any capacity out side of what’s already illegal, then great, it’s a violation of human rights and should rightly be shut down

All rational people know that the indoctrination of children is one of the most crucial challenges of our time. Critical thinking should be taught and learnt, and students having the ability to make up their own minds on issues when being exposed to multiple viewpoints, this is what formal education should endeavour to provide. Right now, our educational institutions are a hollow echo chamber of Marxism.

You know, this is sad that Trump is doing this. Why? Because Freedom of speech shouldnt be something that should be stifled, but it is. Things didnt have to be like this liberals/democrats.

I started to worry when the young left started saying speech is violence. This guy took a beating for criticizing a hate crime hoax. Why? Because the young left is anti-authoritarian and anti-violence. Therefore when you see someone engaging in violence (speech you don’t agree with) from a position of power (white male) you have every right to kick his ass in the name of anti-authoritarianism, anti-violence and anti-racism.

A republican president has to come to the defense of free speech on college campuses. We are living in the bizarro universe.

It's so sad that we need an executive order from the president in order to have free speech on college campuses. College is where I went to challenge myself, to learn and debate new ideas. Boy was I wrong. Colleges are nothing more than glorified daycare centers for adult babies who need safe spaces and trigger warnings. You don't go there to become better, more well-rounded men and women. You go to learn pseudosciences and social justice activism. It's so fucking sad... 😔

public colleges, but you can't do that at a private one. I also agree that's it's mind blowing that the government has to sign a government rule to protect a right covered by the first thing in the BILL OF RIGHTS!

While we're at it, can we get some legislation to protect people from discrimination for their political views?
