Bibles and crosses untouched in West Virginia church building blaze

Firefighters were left stunned after they found Bibles and crosses untouched by the flames that burnt down a church in West Virginia. The fire engulfed the Freedom Ministries Church building in Grandview. ’Though odds were against us, God was not,’ the Coal City Fire Department said on Facebook.

I've burned a few bibles (old and unservicable ones) and they're quite resistant to burning. The leather binding helps. The onionskin pages don't let air flow between them and airflow is key to a good burning. This is unsurprising. No evidence of divine providence here. Just physics favoring thick books is all.

God: Let me burn down this place of warship of me. But I’ll leave the stupid books. God was with us.

"Though odds were against us, God was not" ... but the whole rest of the church burned down... This would only be close to significant if it were a satanic church and the bibles were there for desecration...

This is the cognitive dissonance that I don't understand about religious people. You give credit to god for not burning the books, but you don't give the same credit to god for burning down the church. If this was a human arsonist then he would be condemned and imprisoned for destruction of property and endangering life, but if it's god then he should be praised. Why is this a problem? Because they would still be praising god if someone had died in the fire. This cultish abdication of critical thinking masquerading as faith is one of the reasons we can't seem to make moral progress as an allegedly 'civilized' society.

Maybe a sign that there are absolutely no need for big expensive buildings like churches.

Perhaps their method of worship wasn't up to par and God wants them to get back to basics.

A young man here literally got folded in half after being hit by a car right in front of his house. His dad runs out and holds his 19 year old son in his arms as he takes his last breaths, and passes away. But hey, God managed to save a few books, so that's a miracle, right? I call BS on this. Going by the pictures shown, there are other things that aren't burnt in that picture.

The thing that amazes me is how critical the teachings of Christianity were the core of the enlightenment which lead to the ideas of freedom and emancipation being embraced across Europe. Around the world and throughout history freedom was the exception not the rule. Now we have people striving to exterminate Christianity and purge it from our culture with the belief that it will make people freer. It should not surprise people that the less Christian influence there is in society the less people care for their neighbors and their rights, which inherently make the world less free. I say all this as someone who was raised as a christian but who no longer claims it as my faith. Still I am not blinded to the merits of the philosophy that is the core of Christianity.

there could've been major structural problems that hadn't been detected yet and this saved lives. God works in mysterious ways.
