UN says Burundi forces closure of its rights office there

Burundi has forced the UN to shut its local human rights office after 23 years. Hundreds of Burundians have been killed in clashes with security forces since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced in 2015 he would run for a third term. He won a reelection in 2016. On Tuesday the Burundian government said it had made sufficient progress in human rights, so the UN office was no longer justified.
