House set to vote on bill that would grant DC statehood

The House of Representatives is set to vote Thursday on a bill that would grant statehood to Washington, DC. The legislation, H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, is expected to pass in the House but is unlikely to get enough support in the Senate where it requires to clear a 60-vote threshold for passage. HR 51 was introduced by Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

This would have to ratified by a 2/3 majority of congress, then sent to the states to hold a constitutional amendment vote before it could ever happen, which it will not.

Anyone who thinks this would be a good idea is a fool. This is bad, this is very bad. This is how Nazis rise to power.

Except for small Federal District cede the area back to Maryland. The area south of the Potomac went back to Virginia years ago.

There's no real reason that DC shouldn't just be part of Virginia or Maryland, rather than its own state with its own representatives. If this was ONLY about allowing those 700k folks to vote (which in agree should happen), and not about getting more Democrats in Congress, they would just propose that.

No taxation without proper representation. For you constitutional headed dweebs.

This is power play by the democrats to take more control and boost more big government policies.

Bad idea. DC is far too small of a state and cannot support itself with any form of industry or economic activity. The sensible thing to do is give the land back to Maryland.

I want statehood to be offered to other US territories before we even consider it for DC, if at all. Goodness knows Puerto Rico would benefit from it, Guam too.

Keeping the federal government as its own district was designed to keep any one state from having more power over the others on the federal level. DC was never meant to be a permanent home for anyone, nor have so many people living there.

This is only being done to get more electoral college votes. Honestly, I wish states would start rewarding ec votes to the majority of counties in favor for X candidate. Ties could be solved by popular vote. Popular vote elections don’t work with millions of people in a very large country.

I want California split, the Republican parts wish to secede and become part of “greater Idaho” if you can make not a state a state because you are enemies of the people we can reduce the influence and electoral votes of California by joining the Republican parts with Republican states. If your argument is about “representation” not power you should have no problem with this because it doesn’t flip the balance drastically to one party, allows for “representation” for DC and representation for the largely Republican rural parts of Cali, win win.... unless it’s about *gasp* power

Blatant democrat power grab. Anyone with a lick of attention can see them doing everything to break the system. Changing voting laws last minute. Vouching for unreliable mail-in Voting. Campaigning against Voter ID Wanting to pack the courts. Wanting to open the borders for economic migrants posing as asylum seekers. Using impeachment as a political weapon instead of as a proper tool. Wanting to make DC a state instead of territories like Guam or Puerto Rico instead of letting them vote for it they take measures to ensure another blue state. Campaigning against the electoral college so their liberal cities will run the country. Lowering the voting age to 16. Defending the use of Insurrection to terrorize a city. Defending the use of blatant terrorism on American Streets by Far-Left groups. Calling them Peaceful. This is a power grab. All of these are power grabs. It’s not a coincidence that they’ve been pushing for ALL of these things. I keep seeing bootlickers defending this. Blue voters are really blind to what their party has been pushing.

Crazy how people are so hypocritical that DC should get statehood yet Wyoming has a small population should they get representation or should they also be merged into another state since they can just get a representative they don’t need 2 more senators also with North Dakota with a population of (700k) and South Dakota (800k) they don’t really need tho senators or they should be allowed to also get representation as well as DC, Puerto Rico , & the U.S. Virgin Islands who are Americans with full citizenship yet they have to pay taxes & get none of the benefits in their “ Territory”. This whole conversation is nothing but hypocritical coming from people who always talk about how the system is rigged yess in your favor mf 🤣

No one should actually live in the Federal district. Either make the surrounding areas a state or realign them into neighboring states

So they could make dc a state, but then the capitol would need to be moved to another district which would create the same issues in the long run. There has to be a constitutional amendment to make the federal capital a state.

I don't see the problem here. 700k people not being properly represented in the House or Senate. Obviously DC statehood gives the Dems an advantage in the Senate, but there's an easy fix no matter what. If DC gets Statehood and it's only the National Mall, Capitol, White House, etc. that become the new capital, grant Jefferson (a group of Northern CA counties that want to form their own state) statehood too. Balances the Senate, House is barely touched. Or you can just give the land to Maryland or Virginia. They're hardly swing states, and you just create a single district in a House of 400-something. Just let the people get proper representation.
