New study claims ’50 is the new 40’ when it comes to childbirth

A new study, led by a team from Israel’s Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and Soroka University Medical Centre, found that the age at which a woman can give birth has gradually increased. Scientists attribute the rise in a woman’s age while giving birth to 50 years and beyond as being safe owing to medical and technological advancements. The study included 242,771 deliveries.

Food for thought: can you imagine being 15 and your mom being 65? Being 20 and she being 70? The generation gap is huge and possibly problematic! In high school I had a friend whose parents were very VERY old. She was ashamed/embarrassed of their age. Seriously borderline elderly. She was also a bit weird as a result of their “not getting the youth” to put it nicely. She had a ton of restrictions. While this is a sole example and may not reflect the general masses of “older” women giving birth, the fact that the generation gap being that wide apart from parent to child is definitely something to be considered. Thank you. The more you know.

Autism and autoimmune disease diagnoses increasing may be a result of later age of first child. Certainly mutations such as trisomy are already established as a higher risk.
