Critically endangered vaquita porpoise found dead in Mexico

Conservationists have found a dead vaquita porpoise, a critically endangered marine animal of which only about 10 remain in the world, in a fish net off the coast of Mexico. The vaquita is listed as a ’critically endangered’ species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Red List of Threatened Species.

Critically endangered? If there is only 10 left, they are virtually extinct. There are minimum population limits for each species from which they can recover, even if they were to bounce back they would likely be heavily inbred at that point. The ocean is vast, so it’s possible that the remaining number is larger, but I wouldn’t count on it.
