SEC charges Volkswagen, former CEO with defrauding investors

The US SEC is suing Volkswagen (VW) and former CEO Martin Winterkorn over the automaker’s diesel emissions scandal. VW was caught using illegal software to cheat US pollution tests in 2015. The SEC said VW issued more than $13 billion in bonds and asset-backed securities when senior executives knew that more than 500,000 US diesel vehicles grossly exceeded legal vehicle emissions limits.
