Facebook, YouTube trying to rein in footage of New Zealand mosque shooting

While Facebook wasn’t able to remove the livestream which recorded the entire 6 minute massacre, Facebook has taken a decidedly proactive approach to related videos that have been posted in its aftermath. In addition to seeing to the removal of 1.5 million videos of the shooting, YouTube sent a tweet declaring they are ’working vigilantly to remove violent footage.

The NZ government made it illegal to watch. I understand not glorifying violence and removing it from YOUR platform, but THIS video is too much? Not the beheadings by ISIS? The whole thing is just weird. That being said, I understand Facebook’s decision to remove. Criminalizing it is some major authoritarian shit.

Still found it. 👍

I don't support the spreading of this video, but at the same time deleting it will just create a Streisand effect and make the footage novel and collectable of sorts

I'm so exhausted from this story. My sibling is dating a trans individual. I'm worried that they'll become targets of this psychotic culture war because of that... It eats away at me.

And this is now making the video almost more valuable than any Fappening leak.

This move has nothing to do with decency. You can find similar material on the site that is never taken down. What has happened here is governments are trying to use this as an excuse to regulate these sites and there are enough virtue signaling slacktivists on this hype train that it could happen. Facebook doesn’t want to be regulated so they just do what the mob wants.

I believe it's important to see exactly what happened. You get a true appreciation of what is being reported in the news media.

People who posted and reposted videos of the massacre are kind of deranged themselves.
