Steve Cohen says Electoral College was ’conceived in sin’ to protect slavery

Rep. Steve Cohen said Tuesday the Electoral College was ’conceived in sin’ and originally designed to effectively perpetuate slavery. ’The country is different than it was when the Constitution was drafted,’ Cohen said while issuing support for the move to a national popular vote for presidential elections.

Well, it failed then, because we still have an electoral college and yet no more slaves, unless you count black Democrats. And funnily enough, we were able to elect a black guy for president TWICE even with the electoral college intact. Hey, explain that one.

it's sad when our representatives don't even know our history, like the twin houses of Congress it was the compromise created as a way to constrain the power of high population state, while not doing away with proportional representation, thus allowing the US to change from the already failing articles of confederation to the constitution

What an idiot. Everyone knows that slavery was practiced in America by a minority of white black and brown Americans and was never an ideology that was accepted by mainstream Americans this can be backed up by the SCOTUS outlawing/banning the importation of slaves in 1809 shortly after Americans gained its independence and rights to make their own path in life. This guy is a race-baiting garbage human that needs to be replaced next cycle or asked to step down asap.

Well, that makes absolutely no sense.

If Hillary had won, there would be exactly zero criticism of the electoral college happening right now. Democrats are just fine with the status quo so long as it suits their interests.

What a complete idiot. There is no mystery to why the electoral college was implimented. They left detailed accounts of how they arrived at the conclusion that mob rule aka democracy was an evil abomination and how the only fair handed way to approach government was as a Constitutional representative republic in the Federalist papers. This is a historically ignorant position. What a fool.

Removal of the Electoral College is mob rule. That gets a no from me fam.

They are never going to get 2/3rds of states to vote the electoral college out. So what other constitutional norms do they plan on breaking to push this through?

You guys need to read some real history and not the crap pumped out of the schools because as stated the peculiar institution was a major factor in the Electoral Colleges creation.

Democrats really don't care about US. If this will be abolished, there will be no more "United" States anymore

He is right. All of you posting nasty comments are wrong. The population issue and slavery were both factors in this compromise during this time. It is time for all votes to count equally.

Ladies, gentlemen, and genderqueer, we have proof that these people will do whatever it takes to win. Notice this was not a problem at all when Obama was in office. NOW, and only now had this become a problem. But Russians leaking embarrassing (and true) DNC documents (but leaving the Constitution alone) is election tampering.
