State of emergency to be announced in Japan following surge in COVID cases

A targeted state of emergency is set to be announced by Japan in order to control the surge of COVID-19 cases in Tokyo, Osaka, and two other prefectures. The decision has been taken by the country just two months before it is set to host the Tokyo Olympics. The measures will cover about a quarter of the population of Japan as well as a third of its economy.
