FDA reviews safety of breast implants after cancer concerns raised

The FDA is taking a closer look at the safety of breast implants after concerns about cancer and other health issues have been raised. At a two-day meeting that commenced Monday, officials are hearing from medical researchers, plastic surgeons, implant makers, among others. The FDA has long said that breast implants are safe, and it is not expected to propose any new restrictions at this time.

What the headlines fail to communicate is that all of the experts on the panels who are knowledgeable about the science and stats involved are urging caution and more study without overreaction. The one person on the panel who said the implants should be taken off the market was a consumer representative for whom activists cheered. Basically, it's experts vs. knee-jerk laymen like the anti-vaccination issue.
