New Zealand lawmakers pass initial vote for new gun controls

New Zealand lawmakers on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly in favour of new gun restrictions. The bill was backed by both liberals and conservatives, with only a single lawmaker from the 120 that sit in Parliament voting against it. The vote was the first of three that lawmakers must pass before it becomes a law.

My sincere commiserations, NZ. Being a British ex-pat in America I never truly understood how fundamental the right to bear arms was until I moved here. I feel safe now. I am empowered. The government has no right to control my access to security. America will never become Venezuela. I cannot condone lawlessness, but I will tell you if the US government comes for my guns, I will not surrender them lightly.

Gun Control? You mean removal of all semi-auto rifles? After pandering to a hate filled terrorist and his motives to divide your nation and weaken your citizens by having your government remove said firearms from circulation

Trying to stop more terrorism by doing exactly what the terrorist demanded. Removal of gun rights, censorship and making it a right vs left argument.

"Military style rifles" What is a "military style rifle" anyway? Can anyone give me a concrete description of what this is supposed to be? From my history class I vividly remember seeing rifles that look remarkably like hunting rifles in common military use. Are these also banned? I'm being sarcastic for anyone that hasn't picked it up.

I'm sure the security for the politicians will be the first to turn in their guns. Such stupidity. "Well an armed citizen ram the gunman off and saved many lives" smart country "I guess we should bam guns so the next time we don't have anyone to protect themselves or the other victims" My new joke is going to be how many New Zealanders does it take to screw in a light bulb.

So an Australian terrorist commits an unbelievable act of terrorism, Police don't even kill the guy and they want to punish NZ citizens by taking their guns and even freedom of speech? Really cracking down on the baddies.

when you reduce the number of weapons, the laws of physics still apply. fewer guns are available and they get a lot more expensive. and people caught with them spend more time in jail.
