900 million set to vote as India goes to the polls

India’s prime minister is rallying his nationalist base as the world’s biggest democracy begins a general election on Thursday. The elections though are touted to become tighter than anticipated, thanks to dwindling incomes for farmers and scarce jobs. About 900 million people are eligible to vote in the election, spread over seven phases into next month. Results come in on May 23.
