Sudan president Omar al-Bashir steps down after reigning since 1989

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has stepped down and consultations are under way to form a transitional council to run the country. Reports suggested al-Bashir, who has ruled since 1989, was under house arrest with several aides at the presidential palace. Al-Bashir is a pariah in many countries and is also wanted by the international war crimes tribunal for atrocities in Darfur.
