Meet ’Powehi’, the first black hole to be photographed, named by Hawaiian prof

’Powehi,’ meaning ’the adorned fathomless dark creation’ and based off of a 18th century Hawaiian creation chant, is the name offered to the first black hole in history to be photographed. The compound image released Wednesday was formed from images taken by eight telescopes around the world. The black hole is at the center of galaxy M87, nearly 54 million light years away from Earth.
