Ecuador’s president accuses Assange of using embassy for spying

Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno was quoted saying WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange repeatedly violated his asylum conditions and tried to use the Ecuadorian embassy in London as a center for spying. Moreno denied that he had acted as a reprisal for the way in which documents about his family had been leaked. He said he regretted that Assange had used the embassy to interfere in other democracies.

Lenín Moreno became president with a narrow margin in April 2017 and has since dramatically shifted Ecuadorean internal and foreign politics. This was obviously bad news to Assange; being in a politically different country’s embassy than the one he seeked refuge in.
