Indonesia’s navy says missing submarine may have sunk

Indonesia’s navy says items have been found from a missing submarine, indicating the vessel with 53 crew members has sunk. Navy Chief Yudo Margono said on Saturday that rescuers found several items including parts of a torpedo straightener, a grease bottle believed to be used to oil the periscope and prayer rugs from the submarine.

I remember the Russian nuclear sub the Kursk that sank in 2000. It sat, intact at the bottom on of the ocean as rescue attempts failed. 118 sailors dies as the oxygen ran out. I can remember how awful that felt know that each passing day those brave men knew that they were never going to breath fresh air or feel the sun on their skin again as one by one they died. Some of the letters found after the sub was raised are really gut wrenching to read. We can only hope these brave sailors had a much faster end. From what I’ve heard the Indonesian sub was found in 800 metres of water and was only rated for 500.
