Social Democratic Party wins general elections in Finland with 17.7% of votes

The narrow victory of Social Democrats, followed by the Euroescepic and anti-immigration Finns Party with 17.5% of votes, will complicate the coalition talks. The leader of the party, Antti Rinne would become the first left-winded president since 2003 in the country.

Since this wasn’t a presidential election, Rinne will not become president. He’ll become prime minister, unless he fails at negotiating a government cabinet. In that case, next up would be the party with second-most representatives, where the difference is just one between SDP and True Finns. CNN also got it wrong, since True Finns is a nationalistic centrist party, not right wing at all, which is where the national coalition party is. Not “right-wing” as-in national socialism either; that legacy belongs to the winner SDP, into which national socialist parties were merged into after World War 2, when national socialist parties were made illegal.

That’s messed up when less than a quarter of votes gets touted as a win.

So the three main parties yielded a collected vote of less than 50%? This seems strange to an American but I would love to see Dem and Rep candidates get these numbers. A real democracy allows for individuals to vote and not political parties.
