Northern Ireland journalist killed by gunman during riot

A Northern Irish journalist was shot dead during rioting in Londonderry overnight. Rioting hit the Irish nationalist Creggan area of the city in Northern Ireland late on Thursday after a raid by police, who said they were trying to prevent militant attacks this weekend. At least 50 petrol bombs were thrown and two cars set on fire.

no jokes about BuzzFeed journalism, this is a shame. I hope her family gets the peace they deserve from this.

“Off duty” implies journalists are public servants, they are not.

Was only in Derry a few weeks ago, first time ever, lovely city but the divide is tangible, Catholics and protestants separated by a river, one side calls their home Derry, the other side calls it Londonderry. As a proud Irish man I hope the bastards that did this know they didn't do it in my name, I don't want Northern Ireland back, and I certainly don't consider the Republicans up there countrymen and women.

I'm not a fan of the "off duty journalist" bit but that isn't meant to discredit an unfortunate incident/death. My question is why do people go to places to gather when rioting is going on? Unless you're reporting on it, what good can come from it? Not only can you get hurt, as this young lady unfortunately did, but you risk arrest as well. Either way, rest in peace

Wow, 12 articles available to click on! That is the most I have ever seen. Must be because it happened to a journalist. They often end up in harms way. Its luck this doesn't happen more often.

No one deserves to die like this during their job, lets just hope that justice is well served and that the family finds some peace over the death of their loved one.
