Rights group denounce Egyptian vote giving more power to President Sisi

Nearly 90 per cent of Egyptian voters have approved in a referendum constitutional changes that could see President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stay in power until 2030. Voter turnout during the three-day referendum was 44.33 per cent and 88.83 per cent of those taking part approved the amendments. Human Rights Watch says the vote was ’marred by serious flaws’.

I'm not sure why anybody cares. More often than not Muslim-majority nations just vote for a more or less Sharia-based society. Democracy is pointless if a nation has yet to embrace Enlightenment values. At best all we can hope for is enlightened despotism.
