Chloé Zhao’s Oscars win gets muted response in China, even censorship

Chloe Zhao’s Oscars sweep, winning best director and best picture, has been met with a muted response in China, her country of birth, and even censorship. CCTV and Xinhua, the two main state-run outlets, made no mention of her win as of Monday afternoon. Besides, a post announcing Zhao’s directing win by film magazine Watch Movies on Weibo was censored a few hours after it appeared.

And people think China is the future. Censorship is a sign of weakness, not strength. Censoring Zhao over a perceived slight from years ago has instability written all over it. Congratulations to Zhao for her win.
