Like private credit scores, a person’s social score can move up and down depending on the way they act. Examples of infractions include bad driving, smoking in non-smoking zones, buying too many video games, posting fake news online, etc. It has affected millions already. The system will supposedly be fully operational by 2020, it was first introduced a few years back...

In China, the government oppresses its people. In the West, the people oppress themselves. For instance, if you post something on social media that's offensive to The-Perpetually-Offended, the Twitter horde will go straight for your livelihood. They'll call up your boss to try and get you fired, they'll dox you, stalk your house, harass your family. They'll rally tech giants and corporations to deplatform and unperson you. They'll demand the government implement censorship policies to dictate speech and limit expression. In the UK, they'll even jail you for offensive speech. So tell me again, Westerners, how we are so much better off than the sorry bastards in China.

Reminds me of that episode from Black Mirror: Nosedive. Quite terrifying to know this has turned into a reality.
