Teva, amongst others, accused of conspiring to hike generic drug prices

US traded shares of Teva Pharmaceutical plunged on Monday after 44 states sued the company, alleging it orchestrated a sweeping scheme with 19 other drugmakers to inflate prices. The states claim 20 drug companies, including Teva USA, ’systematically’ divided up the market for generic drugs to avoid competing with one another.

And this is why you loosen patent protection and have negotiated drug rates. Given the vast quantities of pharmaceuticals purchased by federal and state agencies it shouldn't be difficult to negotiate a vast reductions in prices.
