Warren vows to pick ex-public school teacher as Education secretary

Sen. Elizabeth Warren vowed Monday that if she is elected president, ’the Secretary of Education will be a former public school teacher’. In an email outlining her plan, Warren also took a jab at current Education Secretary Betsy DeVos calling her the ’worst Secretary of Education we’ve seen’.

My wife works at a public school. It's a bureaucratic nightmare. Most staff put in the bare minimum effort and just recently got a huge raise. There's no incentive to go above and beyond since the union doesn't allow merit pay. Bad teachers don't get fired. They only get fired for breaking an explicit rule. You already know how that turns out. Teacher unions despise DeVos because she's a threat to their racket. She wants privatization, which would introduce real competition, real innovation, real incentives, and eliminate a lot of dysfunction over night. But it would also dry up one of the Democratic party's biggest sources of campaign cash. When choosing between educational outcomes and money, they choose money. Money is power after all.

Identity politics at it again! Are school teachers a good resource for hands on information? Sure. Does teaching ABCs and history have anything to do with managing school boards? Nope, completely different skill set. Teachers spend a lot of time at school and around students, but so do the janitors and no one is offering them the job
