Especially since this is actually 1A relevant. Most "free speech" cries actually have nothing to do with 1A. It just says that the gov can't limit speech, not that free speech is protected.

Natasha—free speech is protected in our constitution because it is recognized as a civil right. Actually the UN considers it a human right. But technically you are correct—the constitution only addresses our government not abusing this right.

Protected means the government can go in and stop others from imposing restrictions. That's not how 1A is phrased. All it says is that the government wont infringe it. For example if the feds find that a local government is keeping women from voting they will step in. 1A only states that the feds won't restrict it, not that it will protect it on private property (I'd have to look again to see if it would protect from local government restricting it but i dont think it does)
