Switzerland approves stricter gun laws

Switzerland approves stricter gun laws

Swiss voters on Sunday agreed to adopt tighter gun controls in line with changes to EU rules. The projections saw the measure passing in the binding referendum by a comfortable 67-to-33 per cent margin. The Swiss proposal, among other things, requires regular training on the use of firearms, special waivers to own some semi-automatic weapons and serial number tracking system.

The Swiss must have forgotten why they have been the only European country that has resisted war and invasion. It’s hard to stay neutral when you aren’t a dangerous country to mess with.

And this is why we have a Bill of Rights. Established individual rights should never be up to a vote. This referendum really was a solution in search of a problem.

In 1912 Kaiser Wilhelm paid a visit to Switzerland and was told that Switzerland had 500,000 of the finest marksmen in the world. He asked a Swiss soldier what would happen if he invaded with an army of a million soldiers and the Swiss soldier replied to him that they would simply shoot twice and go home. Now we all know what happened two years later, and the Swiss were spared an invasion. Given the talk about the EU army and the fact that as we speak it is becoming more and more of a reality, I think it would be best for the Swiss to continue using that strategy in case they ever want out of the EU.
