Nicaraguan government releases 100 jailed protesters

The Nicaraguan government said on Monday it had begun the process of freeing 100 political prisoners, as it seeks to initiate a dialogue with the opposition to stem the ongoing political crisis. The government said the release was part of a plan to free almost 300 political prisoners by June 18, a large number of whom were arrested in April 2018 when President Ortega tried to cut welfare benefits.
