Renewables surpass coal in US power mix for the first time ever

In a clear sign that renewable energy has gone mainstream, clean-energy resources supplied more of America’s electricity than coal for the first time ever in April. Hydroelectric dams, solar panels and wind turbines generated 68.5 million megawatt-hours of power in April, surpassing the 60 million that coal produced. This is the cleanest power the US has ever made.

These articles leave out the fact that all 3 of these forms of energy combined couldn’t even come close to producing the same amount of electricity as Nuclear power.

And it didn’t even require massive government restructuring of the economy. Imagine that.

Like fucking always, this is highly misleading. Look at the data yourself. It's mostly due to natural gas. Solar and wind and still horribly inefficient. Here have a real article:

How many years was the coal industry stifled by Obama while solar and wind were subsidized? We can’t call that a fair look given how both industries were treated for so long.

Activist who know nothing : We want clean and cheap energy People who actually have a clue : Well there are a lot of new technologies based on nuclears energy to make it safer and even use the waste of previous power plants to make clean energy. First guys : But Chernobyl

Great news! Regardless of your political leanings you should be able to cheer the news that renewable energy sources are now competing with coal as an energy source. Let all energy sources compete and it's good for the country.

Gop hates renewables.

And this is why the US didn't sign up to the Paris agreement which would mean giving millions to other countries.... Because the US is already meeting the Paris agreement requirement.

Wow. Reading the comments here says a lot about how many actually read the articles and look at the data. Not surprising given the purposely deceptive headlines. They're meant to feed into the confirmation bias of the pro-renewable energy crowd. The VAST majority of the so-called renewable energy comes from Natural gas. Not wind, hydro or solar. Those three combined don't even come close to generating a remarkable fraction of what coal or natural gas produce. If we're going to move forward to better energy production, the first step is to stop the lying, wishful thinking and environmental fundamentalism. We can get there, but every lie and manipulation of the FACTS gives false hope to the progressive and reinforces the cynicism of the conservative. Seriously, you activists need to GTFO. You are the reason we don't have cleaner energy today.

Renewables are a lie: Solar - disposable panels that CANNOT be recylced are created using noxious chemicals, are impossible to safely dispose of, and are impossible to recycle. Wind turbine - unreliable, dangerous to the fauna, mechanically unsafe and prone to breakage, produces almost zero usable energy a majority of the time. Both require immense levels of Li-Ion batteries and background baseline power to be provided in order to level out the spikes. Li-Ion batteries are exceptionally toxic, explosive when exposed to heat, degrade when exposed to weather (heat and cold reduces their capacity immensley). Li-Ion has a maximum life span of 5 years in *ideal* protected conditions and practically half in their efficiency after 1-2 years (why do you think you're replacing your phone every 2 years?). Li-Ion currently has no feasible and safe method of disposal or recycling. So fuck you, fuck your stupid ideas about "saving the planet" with "green energy" youre going to fucking kill billions of fish and render our drinking water undrinkable with lithium runoff so fuck you.

The far lefties constantly complain about imaginary global warming, to the extreme that now we have people like AOC claiming that tornados and oil refinery explosions are caused by climate change. We give them a safe, relatively inexpensive solution with now ultra-safe nuclear & hydroelectric, and their answer is "Mwwah!" And they cross their arms and pout like a spoiled 10 year old girl that didn't get a pony, so now she's a fat cat lady that goes around making everyone elses life miserable." Get over yourselves. You're all completely pathetic.

When you consider they aren't actually renewable and they cost far more to build and maintain, I'd rather have the coal and replace them with nuclear water mills when they break down.

Utilise Nuclear I don’t know why we don’t. If we actually did, this would have been headlines ages ago, and for a lot cheaper too.

the term clean energy is highly misleading given all alternative energy uses huge amounts of fossil fuel derived energy to produce the components used in "clean energy" equipment. plus solar panels are constructed using toxic materials.

King Derpmore

I just wish Theyd talk about how short sighted renewables are, especially solar. broken panels can't be recycled yet and end up as a toxic waste. sure, they work (depending on where you live) but if someone throws a pebble a little too hard or a bird takes a solid enough shit, you're out 10 grand and have a toxic plate you can't do anything with.

Funny how one was a heavily subsidized industry where it has cost billions while one was demonized because it is natural polluter. not to mention Renewable takes up alot of land compared to coal to produce electricity.
