Vatican says laws cannot force priests to break seal of confession

The Vatican on Monday reaffirmed Catholic teaching that priests cannot reveal what they learn in confession. A document from the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary said no government or law could force clergy to violate the seal.

um yea that's bullshit. have your beliefs all you want, but the law is the law. not everyone follows your religion and to try to supersede the law based on yours is nonsense. "I'm muslim and I belief God wanted that guy to blow up that building so I'm going to obstruct by not telling you his name but your laws don't apply to me because religion." dumb.

In other words, no law can violate their conscience. How is anyone against this? You are not a “classical liberal”, a conservative, or libertarian, a contemporary liberal, a progressive, or any other major Western political ideology if you are. You are an authoritarian.

I actually agree with this. The government shouldn't be interfering with the affairs of the Catholic church. the last thing people need during a confession is the idea of Big Brother leaning in to hear the juicy bits Separation between church and state goes both ways

Glad to see the Catholic Church sticking to its traditions. For those that don't know, what is said in confession is between you, the priest, and God.

So if you confessed like hard murder to a priest, penance isn't likely going to be very light. You can reasonably expect that a priest will not break the seal of confession but would encourage the murderer to turn himself in. The real problem is when the priests are compromised, like right now. I imagine there is an answer to this situation someone in the Church who is uncorrupted has thought of in regards to this situation but I do not know what

The priest can order the person to turn themselves over to the police in order tog eat forgiveness for their sin. I’m also pretty sure the church teaches that the seal may be violated in the interest of preventing harm to still living persons

This is the right decision. The Priest can tell a person to turn themselves in to gain forgiveness. If the abuser/murderer/ect. is a Catholic they know how serious that is and what is on the line. The Church is separate from the state and should remain so but it goes both ways. Over all we should not expect Priests to make the judgement call here. Forgiveness and Redemption is what they offer and that is why people confess not to have someone judge them but someone to help them come back into the fold and Communion with the Church. If they value that they will follow the Priest's instructions to make their crime right with the Victims and The Lord. I Pray for the Victims of this terrible crime for the hell they have lived through and the innocent priests who will be affected by these wolves in sheep's clothing.

Its just practical, if they do start reporting then people will stop confessing, likely making it much worse for society.

How far the Church of our Forefathers has fallen to come to this point. I Pray the victims find peace in knowing their God loves them and weeps for the suffering they've endured. I pray for the innocent priest who's life's calling and dedication to God has been spat on by these demons in hiding. May God save the Church from the demons hiding within it!

It doesn't matter what the pope has to say about this, it only matters what the law has to say about this. Plus, doesn't the Bible tell people to obey the laws of the land?

What a surprise, pervert priests are passionate about keeping things confidential, it's our little secret ok.

I thought in the US no one was above the law? It seems as though a bunch of people in a religious sect are granting themselves exactly that status. That status by the way is coming from a foreign dictator.
