Tutankhamun statue sells for almost $6M despite Egyptian outcry

A 3,300-year-old sculpture of Tutankhamen’s head sold for almost $6 million at auction, defying calls from Egyptian authorities for the artifact to be returned to its native country. Auction house Christie’s said the ’rare, beautiful and important work’ achieved a price of £4,746,250 ($5,968,058) in London on Thursday, where it was purchased by an unnamed buyer.

The irony of an islamic state who's ancestors brutally conquered and eliminated the native culture complaining about a slightly more recent colonising force hawking the booty of a people long diluted into the shadow of history.

Egypt has no claim to it. Modern Egyptians are mostly Arabs, not the descendants of ancient Egyptians. Muslims are known as iconoclasts. The statue would not be safe in their hands.

The Islamic world has destroyed so much of the cultures before in the areas where it has dominanted, I don't know if I have any sympathy for returning it to unsafe hands.

So, I'm assuming that Egypt bid on the item at the auction as well.
