United Airlines quarterly profit beats on strong travel demand

United Airlines on Tuesday reported a bigger-than-expected increase in second-quarter profit, driven by strong air travel demand and the ability to charge more for seats. United said net income rose 54 per cent to $1.05 billion, or $4.02 per share, in the quarter ended June 30 from $683 million or $2.48 per share a year earlier.
