Brain-eating amoeba kills man after North Carolina water park visit

A North Carolina man has died after contracting an illness caused by a ’brain-eating amoeba’. Lab testing confirmed Eddie Gray was sickened by Naegleria fowleri after swimming at Fantasy Lake Water Park in Cumberland County earlier this month. A state epidemiologist issued a warning that the organism is present in warm freshwater lakes, rivers and hot springs across North Carolina.

The phrase 'brain eating' should be followed by zombie horde not amoeba.

There's a trilogy of House MD episodes which deal with Neglaria from pigeon poop used as fertilizer to grow dodgy cannabis. Very interesting to see this medical situation irl. Deepest condolences for the family of course.

I always thought water parks were mind numbing, but this is a whole other level.

I'm guessing these amoeba are prevalent in NY & southern Cali as well.

Just trying to imagine what it would feel like as your brain was eaten. Only thing I came up with is, "Impeach Trump. Impeach Trump. Impeach Trump. "

if you live in rural areas make sure you boil any untreated water before use. lots of kids die of this as they do not have a fully formed palate and the water can reach their sinuses from the mouth. adults can't get it this way, usually they get it from swimming and getting water up the nose or nasal irrigation with unboiled water.

There were a couple cases of this near where I live in Louisiana a few years ago. One kid caught it in a lake and another one from a slip n slide. Water has to go way up your nose, but scary as hell. At the end of the day I’m still a million times more worried about kids drowning than getting a brain eating amoeba.
