Venice bans cruise ships

Cruise ships have been blamed for damaging the Venice’s delicate foundations and skyline for decades. Finally after a long battle residents in Venice have succeeded in getting cruise ships banned from docking there. The Italian government yesterday announced it would begin re-routing the liners away from the historic city center, which draws some 30 million tourists a year.

Another case where commerce, unchecked, has been allowed to destroy its own rationale. Allowing these mega sized floating tourist hotels to become so big that they destroy the very tourist experience they are built to serve, they now are being shunted off to less interesting venues. More often than not economies of scale go to far when chasing the almighty dollar. Simple planning should have seen this as an obvious consequence.

Those pesky assault ships.

Has there been any studies done on what the actual damage being done by large ships is? Otherwise it could be something else...

Good. One look at that photo shows all you need to know. Those huge ships are an abomination. Whoever supported them going in like that in the first place were idiots.
