Guatemala elects new president

Conservative Alejandro Giammattei defeated his center-left rival in Guatemala’s presidential election on Sunday. Giammattei takes office in January. By then Guatemala is expected to be bogged down in the accord reached at the behest of US President Trump which aims to turn the country into a buffer zone to stem migration. Giammattei has previously called the accord ’bad news’.
