Over 10,000 firearms returned in NZ buyback program

The first month of the gun buyback program in New Zealand has seen more than 10,000 firearms having been handed over to police. Gun owners have until December 20 to surrender semi-automatics, certain parts and magazines and some shotguns. This comes in the aftermath of the attacks on two mosques in Christchurch which left 51 people dead and dozens more injured.

What a waste. Plus none of these people were going to use these for evil. All they have done, given the lack of registration, is take the guns off the good people and give the criminals or those with bad intentions the monopoly on firepower. These people can now take a fully automatic 5.56 weapon into someone's house knowing that they will have nothing to compete with and on top of that, as long as it's well hidden, there's no chance of cops showing up to take it. Madness. Utter madness. The only people with effective weapons will be the police, criminals and terrorists. The police can't protect everyone all the time and just remind me how many rounds you can put down with an AR before the police even get their first call? Area denial is how this needs to work. The chance of them getting away with it or even being able to execute their plan would be minimised when the general populus has access as well. And it is well researched that it's not the severity of punishment that stops crime, its the chance of unsuccessful execution and being caught... Hence why the police were formed. /rant.

To be fair, anyone that would willingly turn in there guns because evil people exist, shouldnt have them anyway, because they don't understand what they are for.

Disarm the population so they can't fight back. Brilliant!

Just for the record. All the people that turned their guns into the government did so voluntarily. No legislation forced them to do it. The people looked at the guns they owned and decided that there was no good reason to keep them. Their government is stable. The populace is reasonably well educated. Unlike the US, where crazy people get automatic weapons and go on shooting rampages with zero interference from the government.

Wasn't there a guy who bought some pipe and made guns to take to the buy back program, then used the profits to buy a rifle? lol

Don't be so quick to Damn the folks who turned the guns in. Personally, if I had a bunch of crappy arms that were too expensive to fix and couldn't sell, i'd dump them on the govt too for cash... keeping the good ones, of course.

return is the wrong phrasing it implies they didn't own them or have a right to them on the first place

New Zealand has an estimated 1,212,000 firearms. If the estimate is accurate that means around .1% of guns have been returned so far.

I wish I could remember her name. Remember the politician who sawed off the barrel of an old shotgun to "prove a point" and broke federal firearms laws in the process, on video, by creating a "sawed off"?! That was hilarious!! haha!
