Trump calls for more mental hospitals to keep people away from guns

Trump said on Thursday he supports meaningful background checks for gun buyers, and added that gunmen in the recent mass shootings were mentally ill and the United States should build more mental institutions.

how many mass shootings occurred before 1960... how many mental hospitals ceased treating patients after 1960...

I work mental health in state prison. Patients/inmates in that setting have heavy duty stuff going on. Gruesome stuff. Prison is not a psychiatric hospital - but it's forced to act as though it is. These inmates are mostly released to the streets, where they are homeless, don't take their psych meds and eventually act out... against the public. Gun or no gun, if they target you, you are in trouble.

This would have a bigger impact on gun violence than all the AR 15 restrictions and ammo taxes combined. The reduction in suicides alone would eclipse the number of mass shooting victims

The Reagan administration defunded the program that institutionalized the mentally unfit. Prior to that, there were no homeless on the streets. That program needs to be reinstated.

With a member of our family suffering greatly from schizophrenia, holding his family hostage since they don't want to put him on the streets, this is a very welcome idea. Because for people like him it's either homelesness or him potentially hurting his elderly parents.

Mental illness does not cause violent crime. Unless you include substance abuse. So what you really need is better treatment of substance abuse, especially alcohol. Other types of mental illness actually increase your chance of being a VICTIM of violent crime, not a perpetrator.

Nope. Not the solution. We need a cultural change back to morality. We need to strengthen the family unit and teach about our great shared history. We need to teach our youth the rights we have, why we have them, and the duties that come with them. We need to be the greatest nation on the planet and know we are. We need Americans to grow up with hope in the American dream! This will help our future generations be strong men and women with a desire to lift each other up.
