Trump says ending birthright citizenship is back on the agenda

Reiterating his former campaign agenda, Trump told reporters he may end the ’ridiculous’ policy of birthright citizenship, which awards citizenship automatically to those born in the United States. ’We’re looking at that very seriously,’ Trump told reporters as he left the White House for Kentucky.

What I find most interesting about the 14th amendment is that it doesn't say that anyone born here is a citizen, it says that anyone born here "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof" is a citizen meaning children born here from a mother who flew here to have the kid and get it citizenship doesn't actually have citizenship since they have never been subject to the jurisdiction of the US or any state in the Union. Likewise it can be argued that, since illegal immigrants are here illegally and therefore not subject to US jurisdiction since if they were they wouldn't be here in the first place, their children are not citizens either.

Suddenly the left cares about an amendment!

Even though I tend to lean left, I agree that this is an odd amendment. It can, and has, been taken advantage. Pregnant women can just fly here, have the baby, and become a citizen without contributing nothing to our country?

As much as I agree you need 2/3rds of the states for a constitutional amendment without that your can't circumvent the Constitution or leftist with with the 1st 2nd and 4th.

Trump's not going to do it, it would require executive order to do it and it would cause massive complications to where I'm 100% sure he doesn't want to be responsible for screwing an executive order up again like for the travel ban

Interesting take on the 14th Amendment, guaranteed to be challenged instantly should he try to change the current understanding of it. Ultimately, the current status is weird - one's citizenship appears to be strictly limited to birth taking place within the borders of the US and without regards to the citizenship status of one's parents. Or being born outside of the US borders but to American citizens.
