Amazon burning at a record rate, warns space agency

As per Brazil’s space research center, wildfires in the Amazon rainforest have hit a record number this year, with 72,843 fires detected so far. This marks an 83 per cent increase over the same period of 2018 and is the highest since records began in 2013. Smoke from the fires, more than 2,700 km (1,700 miles) away, caused a blackout in the city of Sao Paulo on Monday.
