UN expert: No peace in Myanmar if no military prosecutions

Radhika Coomaraswamy, a Sri Lankan lawyer a member of the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar said Friday that there will be no long-term peace in Myanamar and no return of Rohingya refugees unless there is accountability for the ’brutality’ of the Asian country’s military forces.

Myanmar is the type of country where democracy is highly impractical due to the deep ethnic divisions. It is also the type of country where monarchs and dictators are fully capable of threatening to exercise absolute power against those who want to stoke ethnic tensions via murder or genocide. Such a leader would need to overthrow the Burmese military though. They are the ones in power and are exercising it in a disproportionate manner.
