Brazil puts 60-day ban on land-clearing fires in Amazon rainforest

A decree prohibiting the legal fires for land clearing was signed by President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday. The 60-day ban is an attempt to stop the burning that has devastated parts of the Amazon region and international criticism of Bolsonaro’s handling of the environmental crisis. The period of the new ban coincides with the dry season, when most fires are usually set.
