Iranian athlete to seek asylum after defying national federation

Saeid Mollaei, an Iranian Judo athlete, will reportedly seek asylum in Germany after refusing to follow orders from his national federation, which had asked him to drop out of the world championships. Iranian authorities allegedly did so in order to avoid a potential match against Israel’s Sagi Muki. The two nations have been enemies since 1979, due to Iran’s refusal to recognize Israel.

good for this guy for being a true competitor. he should have his choice of nations, who wouldnt want a champion. it would be my personal favorite if israel took him in since they already have muslim areas that hed fit into, and it would make their already 1st place judo team, even stronger.

I respect Judo practitioners implicitly. I had the honor of training under a gentleman who used to bounce at a local bar. We're a college town, and this spot was popular with the fraternity crowd. I'm sure some of the clients to whom he applied his trade are putting their doctor's kids through college too.
