GameStop to close over 200 stores

GameStop has announced that between 180 and 200 stores around the world will be closing their doors for good before the year is out. GameStop CFO James Bell announced that ’underperforming’ stores will be closed between now and the end of the year. For the second quarter, global sales decreased 14.3 per cent, marking an adjusted net loss of $32 million.

more like "Gamestops terrible returns policy and lack of abiliry to please customers, may cause store closings" they did this ti themselves, by becoming the Largest market share of Vigeo Games, also exoected to hold onto that. like buying everyone else out didnt make everyone made snd find alternste options. hahaha

I would frequent a chain that had a decent return policy, did game rentals, gave you more than pennies for used games, and also did retro games like Nintendo, Sega Genesis, etc.

All of these niche brick-and-mortar buildings are going to die; all hail Amazon, king of retail and all things obscure.

Alot of people celebrating this, but keep in mind this is not a great thing. I would attribute their failure to digital sales. Keep in mind when you buy a digital copy you are essentially renting the right to play it. If that game becomes unavailable for any reason you are fucked. Physical copies always are better than digital. What happens when your internet goes out and it cant verify your purchase or some bullshit. You lay for internet, and then pay for the priviledge of playing your game you already bought on that internet. Games creation is becoming over simplified and bloated. Instead of creating works of art that you can play for years, they give you an hour long play for $60 you will buy again when they change a couple character models and release it again under a different title name in 6 months.

I had this conversation with a friend of mine the other day. There really is no need for stores like this anymore. Hell, you can buy the games directly through the console and not have to worry about losing the physical disk. I guess the downside is that you can no longer resell your games for money towards another game.

A microcosm for the gaming industry. You’ll take $0.80 for that brand new game you want to return and you’ll like it! Have a side of micro transactions and launch day disasters while you’re at it!
