Taliban negotiators arrive in Moscow

A Taliban negotiating team arrived in Russia on Friday. The trip comes less than a week after President Trump announced that peace talks with the militant group in Afghanistan were essentially ’dead’. Russian state news agency cited the Taliban’s spokesman as saying the delegation had held consultations with President Vladimir Putin’s envoy for Afghanistan.

Haha, is the 'Taliban' shopping around for the best Peace deal they can find? Is there a Costco discount on that?

In 1978 the Afghan communist party took over the country. In 1979 the Soviet Union sent the army in to Kabul. The US started funding the Taliban. For 10 years the soviets fought them. Then, sensibly knowing they couldn't win, they left. Now the US, after 19 years still hasn't figured it out. And the Taliban is cozying up to the Russkies to fight the US.

AFAIR, Afghanistan shares a border with Tajikistan and thus is a threat of Islamist radicalization and opium trade - I doubt the Russians would be comfortable with that. They may agree to collaborate against the 3rd party, say the US, but those are not the beards I'd put my trust in.
