Former French president Jacques Chirac dies at 86

Jacques Chirac, a former two-term French president, died Thursday at age 86. Chirac was the first leader to acknowledge France’s role in the Holocaust and defiantly opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. A cause of death was not given, though Chirac had had repeated health problems since leaving office in 2007. He held office from 1995-2007 and was recognized as a consummate global diplomat.
