US President Trump and Iranian President Rouhani were to have a meeting at the UN General Assembly but the meeting fell through and both have provided clashing reasons for the fallout of the meeting. The Iranian President reported that Trump offered to lift sanctions after the meeting while Trump reported that Rouhani wished that the sanctions should be removed before the meeting with Trump

Hey Reuters, don't forget that the United States president claims that Iran was already violating the nuclear agreement. They aren't just at odds over wrongful imprisonment and sanctions.

These "news" sources are reporting Iranian claims and the general reaction (denial) by the US but no context of what started all of this in the first place or why the US is responding as it is.

Sounds like Rouhani is trying to play to local politics back in Iran. I'd bet that his hardline stance is unpopular among his supporters and he is probably under some significant pressure by the public and his power base in Tehran to fix things and he needed an excuse for maintaining his hardline while in the US so he concocted this story to take the blame off himself for his failure to meet and discuss things.
